Our teacher, Mrs Tay showed us a demonstration of how simple distillation works using Coca-Cola. When the distillation was completed, caffeine and carbon (decomposed sugar) was left behind while water was collected in the receiver.

Important points to note!
- Why does the water ender the condenser from the bottom and exit from the top?
To ensure that most of the water vapour is condensed when they reach the bottom of the condenser and can be collected as liquid. Cool water wil not fill up the condenser if it enter from the top, hence condensation will be less effective.
- What is the function of the boiling chips?
To smoothen the boiling process.
